The Socialist Movement for Integration leader, Ilir Meta, used May 9th,
the Day of Europe, to appeal once again the entire Albanian political
class to pass the three laws that are required by the European Union
for Albania’s candidate status.
‘Today, on the day of Europe, I invite the Democratic Party leader, Sali Berisha; the Socialist Party leader, Edi Rama, and all the other colleagues, to stop our electoral campaign for five minutes and pass the three laws. Albania deserves the EU candidate status”, Meta declared.
The SMI leader proposed that these laws should enter in effect this September, in order to avoid the politically biased appointments, such as those that according to Meta have been noted in some cases at the Supreme Court.
When asked about the recent developments at the Tirana Municipal Council, the SMI leader declared that the actions of the right winged councilors were grotesque. He invited them to accept the will of the majority in this council, taking example from their former colleague at the Elbasan Municipal Council, who resigned right after the new majority took over.
“The recent developments at the Tirana Municipality do not inspire European standards. We have a former Council Chairman who overlooks the legal request of the majority and tries to hide the truth with grotesque actions, such as taking the keys with him. Mr.Kosovrasti must take example from the Elbasan councilor who accepted the new political reality”, Meta declared, adding that this happened after the Central Election Commission was violated as an independent institution.
A poll that was posted lately showed that the Alliance for European Albania is 9% better than the right winged coalition. For Meta, this gap is even deeper. He said that the poll was held many weeks ago and things have changed.
