The Albanian Parliament Speaker, Ilir Meta, met with the representative
of the European Parliament, Gianni Pitella. The Parliament Speaker
reminded the sudden intervention in the Constitution in 2008, which,
according to Meta, was done overnight and without consulting the Venice
Commission.
“Ths is an open process, so that it can be stable and not be allowed to make other constitutional changes. Our constitution is among the most democratic in Europe”, Meta declared.
Meta recognized the problems of the current system and expressed his support for this reform.
“We have expressed our support for the justice system, which is a system that has not functioned as we expected. There is a serious responsibility with the implementation of the law in the fight against corruption and the organized crime. It is necessary to change it”, the SMI declared.
Meta said that the propositions of the SMI to the Venice Commission aim to improve the draft presented by experts. He did not comment regarding the voices that circulate recently, saying there are contacts between the SP and the DP for changing the Electoral Code.
The Parliament Speaker asked to end the delays with decriminalization and pass the law as soon as possible.
“The SMI has a clear agenda and the first point is to end decriminalization. In principle, we are against decriminalization and the delays that damage the reputation of Albania”, he said.
