For the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, Western Balkan countries have a
clear perspective for the European Union accession, although they still
have a long way ahead.

In her recent message, the German Chancellor underlined that there are clear criteria as regards the accession.

She said that Germany supports the accession, but experience shows that :when there is no progress before the membership, the path will not be easier”.

The accession perspective is not written only on paper, but it is also related to wide support programs. At the end, it is up to the countries if they want to go through special phases or not”, the Chancellor declared.

The German government encourages the aspiring countries to create a reliable legal system.

“In all talks with the representatives of these countries, the rule of law remains in the first plan. There are wide consulting programs of the European Union, in which Germany is also part of, but the aspiring countries are the ones who need to do the work”, Merkel declared.

Confirming that there has been progress, the Chancellor reiterated why there is still too much to do, especially as regards the co-existence in Serbia and Kosovo. She underlined that the existing conflict of the Balkan countries need to be resolved before the European Union accession, otherwise, experience has shown that conflicts that are not resolved immediately will never be resolved, or they will last much longer.

“There will be peace in Western Balkan only when there will be European perspective”, declared the Head of the German executive, referring to the start of the First World War 100 years ago. She reminded that the European history is eternally tied with the history of Western Balkan.
