Mediterranean turning into a cemetery

The Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat, declared that the European
waters close to Africa are turning into a cemetery, after another ship
full of immigrants sank this Friday.

Mr.Muscat said that Malta felt abandoned by the rest of Europe, and insisted that the European Union should take tangible actions.

Malta and Italy started a salvation operation after the ship sank, leaving more than 50 people dead. The tragedy took place 120 kilometers from Lampeduza, the Italian island where at least 300 immigrants drowned last week.

The loss of lives has opened new debates in the European Union regarding the immigration rules. The ship that was carrying more than 200 immigrants was facing difficulties in the Maltese waters, a few moments before dawn.

The immigrants used a satellite phone to give the alarm, but the ship sank when passengers moved to one side while trying to attract the attention of an airplane that was passing by.

More than 500 immigrants were saved by the Italian coast guards a few days ago, close to Sicily.

Another accident was verified this Friday in Egypt, Alexandria, where 12 illegal immigrants died. The Egyptian authorities declared that more than 116 Palestinians and Syrians were saved from water.

Mr.Muscat declares that the intervention of Malta and Italy helped peoples’ lives, and complained that from the European Union they have heard only empty words.

“Our politicians are thinking how to strengthen laws on immigration, while our main concern are these people at sea”, Muscat declared.
