Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj, was today in the Special Court against Corruption in the first session of the defanation trial with the former prime minister of the DP opposition, Sali Berisha, whom he sued for his statements about Iran.
Veliaj told the journalists that Berisha will give an account for his slander where he accuses Veliaj of ties to officials in Iran.
“Today the court decided that on May 19 at 10:00, Sali Berisha will be accompanied by the police for a mandatory appearance in court. This means accusing othe rpeople and not appearing in court for the most monstrous defamation, talkin about other people’s families and not having the civil courage to come to court.
“The police, according to the judge’s decision, must do their duty and forcefully bring Sali Berisha to face the accusations and defamation that are unworthy, not only for an 80-year-old man, but for anyone who engages publicly and who uses its public presence to destroy norms and values in this society”, said Veliaj.
Sali Berisha did not appear at the first session after the lawsuit filed by the Mayor of Tirana for defamation, even though a few days ago he made strong accusations against him regarding the Tirana incinerator affair, as well as the mayor’s relationship with Iran through an citizen named Miliad Lopa.
“Sali Berisha must prove these stories with Iranians in a court, and these stories with revolutionary guards, with fictitious photos, slander and false accusations, Sali Berisha must prove in court. Sali Berisha is an evil man. He has sown hatred and division and slander and has promoted the culture of smearing someone without holding any responsibility”, said Veliaj.
Berisha reached the peak of his accusations when he said that in the photo with Miliad Lopa was also Qasem Soleimani, the former head of the Iranian special forces who was killed by a drone by the Americans. To refute Berisha, the municipality published a photo taken three years ago of Miliad Lopa with Ilir Meta, challenging Sali Berisha to also accuse his political partner of being connected to the Iranians.
