Away from the public attention focused on the ship with toxic waste that has arrived at port of Durres in the west of the Albanian capital, the Municipal Council of the city has voted to increase the salary of the mayor and the municipal administration.
The approval was made without the votes of the majority of opposition councilors who left the hall after the debate about the social-economic discrimination created between these salaries and the pensions and economic assistance given to families in need.
“57% increase for the salary for the mayor, while the pensioners increase is 4.1%, and the economic assistance is about 2200 ALL per month, this is not right. We cannot accept this discrimination”, said Dritan Burgija, Chairman of the group of advisers of the DP opposition.
The head of democratic councilors also requested the reaction of the socialists on the return of toxic waste to Durrës as harmful for the entire population, regardless of political affiliation. Then, as a sign of protest, the councilors of the DP and the Freedom Party left the hall. Despite this, socialist councilors and their allies approved salary increases for elected officials and civil servants. An increase has also been approved for the monthly remuneration of Durrës municipal councilors.
According to the mayor Emiriana Sako, “the salary increase will bring a better quality service to the citizens”.
