Commissioner Stefan Fule gave a message for May 9th. 62 years ago, on
the same date, Robert Schumann made a proposal that brought the
foundation of the European Union.

“I am addressing you in a very important day for Europe. On May 9th of 1950, Robert Schumann presented his proposition that brought the foundation of the European Union, a unique project for a united community, based on the values and principles that it shares. With his evolution, the European Union enabled the citizens to enjoy an unprecedented period of peace, by increasing the well-being. The European Union is an unchangeable body. It enlarges. Enlargement is in Europe’s DNA. Despite the recent difficulties, Europe will keep growing. Croatia will join us soon and Serbia received the candidate status, while the negotiations with Montenegro will start in the following months. We are determined to preserve this progress, regardless the current challenges that Europe is facing. These challenges are related with globalization, rather than enlargement. The enlargement is not a cost. In fact, it is part of the solution. For achieving it, we need to work together and you must play an important role for this, especially after entering the EU. Together we can shape the future of Europe, in full accordance with the vision expressed by the founding fathers. This is the Day of Europe. Enjoy it”, Fule declared.
