Panos Kamenos, the Greek Minister of Defense, and also Head of the
“Independent Greeks” Party, part of the ruling coalition, declared
during his visit at the border checkpoints with Albania that he will
reopen all military posts and reinforce the army along the
Albanian-Greek border.
“We are making a new planning of the area. The restructuring of the army will be made soon”, he declared.
“We will increase the number of recruits in the region. There will be new commando units with military maneuvres in the area, and more helicopters to give a sense of security to the residents”, Kamenos declared.
He appealed the Greek youth who abandoned these areas to return and revive the agricultural sector.
As for the claims of Tirana regarding the maritime borders, he declared that the sovereignty is not negotiable by anyone, even if there are economic or foreign threats.
“Greece is not afraid and will not give a millimeter of land, air or sea”, Kamenos declared.
The former government of Samaras had also declared 18 months ago to increase the number of military posts in the 600 kilometer border with Albania, especially to stop drug traffic, poaching and deforestation, but the project was not concluded.
Minister Kamenos said that his party is known for an opposed position to the radical they are ruling the country with, especially as regards immigration and relations with neighboring countries.
