Many Albanian churches are endangered

The small Shen Premte church in valesh, Elbasan, used to have extraordinary values of Albanian cultural heritage.

The church was declared a National Cultural Monument, due to the rare murals painted by Onufri in 1554. After being robbed four years ago, this monument is starting to lose its identity.

Almost nothing has remained inside the Valesh church, and the same thing is going on with the Shelcan church, where humidity is taking Onufri’s saints one by one.

The church is unable to do anything, since they have no competence over the culture monuments.

Father Jani Rxha, priest of Gjinar, says that although the church has spent 10 million EUR for its monuments, they have no competence over the objects.

Specialists agree that the church would do a better job to maintain them, since the government doesn’t have a school or professional restorers.
