The former Socialist Minister of Finances, Arben Malaj, says that the
government is disorienting the economy, taking as example the double
standard of the Ministry of Finances, which on one hand hampers the
construction of the Kosovo line, and on the other accelerates the
lottery procedures.
“We must run faster in the energy area, especially for the powerline construction with Kosovo. As for the gambling area, more penalizing laws are needed so that there will be less interest in gambling, rather than making them the dominating activity of the Albanian government”, Malaj declared.
The former Minister asked the government to stop the National Lottery tender until the gambling laws will be reviewed. According to him, the Albanian economy is endangered by the domination of the gambling industry and this is not the right time for giving the National Lottery license.
“The government must not rush and give tenders for having a winner that increases the gambling presence in Albania. The entire legal framework must be reviewed, because they are increasing in a frightening way. They increase the social problems and the cost for increasing the gambling presence will be even harder to carry.
The Ministry of Finances has blocked the construction of the Albania-Kosovo powerline, justifying it with the fact that the 8 million EUR cost was expensive, while they are selling the National Lottery license for 3.5 million EUR, when evaluations in other countries have shown that the price could be 10 times bigger.
