After the Brdo-Brijon Process meeting held in Skopje, Macedonia, the host of this initiative, Macedonian Prseident Djordje Ivanov, appealed the EU to allow accession talks at the same time that Greece and Macedonia discuss about their bilateral differences.
He underlined that the EU summit that will be held in Sofia comes as result of the requests made by countries in the region and EU commitment. It also comes as result of the readiness shown by the Bulgarian Prime Minister, who placed Balkan countries on top of the agenda, now that Bulgaria has the EU presidency turn.
Ivanov said that today’s meeting focused on the connectivity in the region, which, according to him, will decide if it will be considered as a developed region. He added that the countries of the region have three things that connect them with each other: economy, security and threats from illegal immigration, criminal networks, returned foreign fighters and terrorists, for which they all must cooperate.
“We expect the EU to give us more than empty promises, because the EU accession is not an empty ideal for us. As a region, we have the duty to guarantee good governing through the rule of law and fundamental human rights”, Ivanov said.
