The Macedonian Foreign Minister, Nikola Dimitrov, declared before the
visit of his Greek counterpart. Nikos Kotzias, that Macedonia remains
determined to build good relations with its neighbors, especially
Greece, with which they have a disagreement about the name.

Dimitrov says that the most important thing is having open relations and deciding what is important for Greece and Macedonaia as well.

He underlined that Skopje wants Macedonia’s Euro-Atlantic integration process to be unblocked by Greece, based on the temporary agreement between the two countries, until a final pact is taken for the constitutional name of Macedonia.

But what’s unexpected in his declaration is that Macedonia seems ready to accept its NATO accession even with the name FYROM.

“The Republic of Macedonia, based on the temporary agreement, is ready to accept the invitation to become a NATO member with a temporary reference, which was also accepted at the UN. This is in full accordance with the decision of the International Court of Justice in Hague. We are convinced that this would create a good understanding, since the decade-long blockage didn’t help a constructive relation between our countries”, Dimitrov said.

The Macedonian Foreign Minister adds that his country doesn’t want to start accusation games with Greece, since the NATO accession of Macedonia would mean an alliance between both.

“Our position has been ruined in the past years. We have done a lot during these two months and a half in government, after the new government was formed, but there is still more to do for bringing back our old friends, create new friends and give evidence that we are not the problem. The main purpose remains the stability in the region, so that our region is home to everyone, and for a stable, united Europe”, Dimitrov declared.
