On the last day of mandate, the Lithuanian Presidency of the European
Union is negotiating with the member countries about the Council’s
stance on Albania.
A high-rank European Union official said for Top Channel that the presidency is working with the Commission and the hesitating countries about this platform, for giving the candidate status at it has been recommended in October.
“He explained that the hesitating countries have a very important position for the European Union decision making, and are using good arguments that are related to the insufficient time for noting the results that have been asked from Albania. But there is still time until Tuesday, and I think that we can reach a consensus”, declared the Presidency’s representative with optimism.
Regardless of the public declaration of Minister Timmermans in the Dutch Parliament for postponing the decision on December 2014, the high-rank official declared that there are fewer chances for postponing the candidate status, since the discussions are still undergoing for this December.
Even if the negotiations fail this time, this decision could be taken in the Spring Council. Although, the calendar of works foresees discussions over enlargement, but in winter summits.
“Until March, the hesitating countries would have enough time to verify the results reported by the Commission, and this arguments is found more frequently than the one for the next December”, the European Union official declared.
