Arif Lala is one of the dozens of young applicants who was trained to work as lifeguard on the beach, during the tourist season, but no one is hiring him.
He has been facing the arrogance of private operators who exploit beaches. There are 180 beaches along the Vlora coastline, and none of them has hired lifeguards, who could save lives.
Dozens of young applicants were trained in Vlora, but the wooden watchtowers remain empty, from Zvernec to Orikum, in both public beaches and spaces leased to private operators.
“They don’t see it reasonable to hire lifeguards. They are being indifferent”, said Perparim Kamberaj, lifeguard trainer.
