Albanians are welcome in the EU, said in an interview for Deutsche Welle the vice leader of the Parliamentary Group, CDU/CSU, Katja Leikert.
She said that the Bundestag will keep accompanying Albania and Northern Macedonia in their path towards the EU.
When asked how should they understand the conditions that were set to Albania, Leikert said that they had consulted the German Bundestag, and the matter seems relatively clear for Northern Macedonia. Albania needed more time, since the internal political situation is not democratic, with the opposition boycotting the parliament and the Constitutional Court being inexistent”, Leikert declared.
“We know that there are still some problems with the organized crime and drug traffic. These are problems that need a closer look. But we said “yes” because we wanted to give a signal to the Albanian people that they are welcome in the EU, and that this is their orientation. Many Albanians are leaving the country because they don’t see a perspective there. But this cannot be the future of a country. It is a very beautiful country and we want to accompany them in the path of democratization”, Leikert declared.
