Sali Berisha led the last government meeting, before starting the constitutional procedures of political rotation on Monday.
Resignations of deputy ministers were approved during the meeting and soon, Prime Minister Sali Berisha shall submit a formal resignation of the cabinet to the President to remain in office until the moment when Parliament will give the vote of confidence to new Prime Minister, Edi Rama.
But before these constitutional procedures are performed, Sali Berisha decided to have a last meeting of his government, for about 100 minutes, to point out what he calls the main achievements of Albanians during the eight years of his government.
Having as major objectives the Euro-Atlantic integration of Albania, Prime Minister Sali Berisha mentioned the NATO membership, visa liberalization, the signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union. Achievements, which according to him, gave Albanians the deserved dignity, regardless, as Sali Berisha says, all these processes had as a leading public opponent, the next Prime Minister Edi Rama, who deliberately prevented taking the status of candidate country for two consecutive years.
“You’ve voted and have taken your decision. And with these words I only wish that the person you voted for and who will sit in this chair after a few days, will not use the petty interests of his power to block this vital process for Albanians. We stand in support of the integration process and assure you that even in opposition, we will support this process,” said Berisha.
Prime Minister Berisha said that, despite the continued efforts, Albania is still far to win the battle against corruption, but he expressed the concern that the new government lacks the willingness to do this.
“From this room I will ask Albanians, those who voted in favour of new majority, or against, or who did not vote at all. Have you ever heard of even a single notion of Rama about the way he will fight the corruption? Zero. Nobody can articulate even one commitment from him about the fight against corruption. Because he sits in this chair with a palace and a villa for which there is not a single penny stated and has elected his cabinet based on the same criteria. Therefore, he does not say how he will fight against corruption,” said Berisha.
Being careful to make the contrast between the achievements of his government in every important field and electoral promises of future Prime Minister Edi Rama, Sali Berisha expressed his belief that the risk of future failure of the new Government is 95 per cent, as his election victory was based on fraudulent promises.
“The promise free health care, free contributions, means this system failure. We would be happy, if it was true, but to make others happy by lying is a big responsibility. We can never promise the same things as the painter, who made promises just like Papandreu and now has escaped in an unknown direction. Albania, each of you, dear citizens, will have very serious problems. We will protect you for everything. To say that the Albanians will have free health care, free legalization, that will reward the ex prisoners for two years, 95 percent of Albanians that would lower prices…these are sweet promises, but you’re not hearing anything concrete. He talks about everything else, but not for them. We guarantee the protection of dignity and this we will do with determination,” Berisha recalled.
