Kukes poorest village in protest

The residents of the Cernaleva village in the Shishtavec Commune, Kukes
District, protested and claimed that the company that has built a power
plant in this area has caused huge damages in exploiting the water
reserves.

Residents say that the power plan has taken their main water source, which has been the only way of survival for centuries. They would have to travel to Kukes mills for the flour that they have as a basic food in winter.

The residents of this village threaten to interrupt the work at the hydropower plant, since that would mean having their children starving.

The construction of this hydropower plant caused conflicts between the residents of the village and the construction company, due to the claims for property ownership.

The conflicts were very serious and degenerated to violence, causing the residents to clash with the police after they protested and didn’t allow the builders to destroy the village’s forests and lands. Cernaleva is the poorest village in Kukes, without roads or health service, and primitive agriculture is the only means of survival.
