The residents of Kukes joined the opposition’s protest in Milot, from where the Kukes Mayor, Bashkim Shehu, asked Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama to release the protesters.

“We appeal the Prime Minister to release citizens and let the police work with more important stuff, such as arresting members of organized crime, because citizens are on their right to protest”, Shehu declared.

In a video conference with the Kukes citizens, the Albanian Prime Minister said that he has not met the Mayor, who, according to Rama, did not distance himself from the violence, and added that the fate of the protesters is decided only by the judicial institutions, not by Rama.

“We live in a country with constitution and laws. The appeals to release this and that person are being sent to a  wrong address because this is a competence to judicial institutions. I want to tell the Kukes Mayor that I have not backed off, but I am doing a process that we should have done before. And I don’t see myself as someone who doesn’t make mistakes”, Rama said.

He apologized for the lack of communication and said that starting from February, they have been working to identify people who use the road more frequently.

“Unfortunately, there was manipulation and abuse with this matter. THhre were many lies”, Rama said.
