Kosovo’s UNESCO accession fails for three votes

09/11/2015 12:45

Kosovo was unable to become a member of UNESCO. 92 voted in favor, 50 against, 29 countries abstained out of 142 in total.

The second voting procedure was for Serbia’s request to postpone it for the next UNESCO assembly.

The countries that have voted against or abstained are mostly countries that have not recognized Kosovo. However, even some of those who recognized the independence, such as Japan, Kuwait and Egypt have also abstained.

The Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hashim Thaci, wrote on Facebook that Kosovo’s path is unstoppable, and the request will be repeated.

Russia declared that the voting was a victory for Serbia, showing that Kosovo should not exist as a country.
