The number may be even higher. Some have called it “the dark secret of the war”.
The victims were not only tortured during the aggression, but they have had to suffer humiliation for many years.
For this reason, many of the women who decided to tell their stories never showed their face.
One of them is Vasfije Krasniqi Goodman, who lives today in Texas, USA.
She decided to break taboos and make a public account of the sexual assault which turned into the heaviest burden of her life.
She was sixteen when she was assaulted by two Serbian military men.
Vasfija tells her story, how she was taken from her home at gunpoint, and how she was praying that the Serbian police officer would rather kill her.
“His left hand was wounded,” he told her. “Your father and brothers did this to me and now you are going to pay”.
Last year Vasfija published an open letter to the man who raped her, while this was the first time that she told the story for a TV network. Her motivation is to empower other women and use her story as an inspiration of courage and hope.
