The EU Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE)
discussed this Monday the draft handed over by the Special Rapporteur
for Kosovo and for Visa Liberalization, Tanja Fajon.

The Committee approved the report of the Slovenian MP with 25 votes in favor and 24 against, but they rejected with 24 votes in favor and 25 against the start of the negotiations before fulfilling the EU criteria, among which is the border demarkation with Montenegro.

“I believe that the visa lift will give a strong signal to the Kosovo citizens, so that they don’t lose their hopes and aspirations for the EU integration path, which goes through these reforms”, Fajon said.

Some Committee representatives asked for the voting to be postponed, but the session chairman rejected the request, saying that in case of a positive voting for Kosovo, the decision would enter in effect only when the conditions are met.

The Demarkation with Montenegro has fired up the political climate in Prishtina. The opposition accuses the government of giving away 8000 hectares to Montenegro. The government, on the other hand, says that the agreement is fair.

The ratification of the agreement was postponed by the Parliament, which increased voices that the visa liberalization would not be approved.

Ulrike Lunacek and Tanja Fajon, two European MPs, considered the failed agreement with Montenegro as regrettable.
