Everything seems ready to establish a permanent control in some border checkpoints bewteen Serbia and Kosovo.
Some EULEX workers removed old border objects while a red line on the asphalt marks the territories of each countries. New border objects will be placed in that space, according to the agreement for an integrated border control.
But the northern border with Serbia is another story. Prishtina showed it power in this part of the territory by transporting its police and customs officers from the air.
A KFOR helicopter brought the customs and police officers at the Jarinje Checkpoint. The Kosovo officers were placed in an area controlled by KFOR, recently established in the border.
The Kosovo officials then enter two civilian vehicles, without plates, and drive two kilometers in Serbian territory.
They have to carry with them clothes and food, since their working shift is 72 hours.
“The conditions are not bad. We have an establishment here and everything is alright. We have EULEX as mediator, and the cooperation has been normal so far”, declared Mensur Bekteshi, a customs officer.
The Kosovo and Serbian officers work at the same checkpoint in Jarinje, with an increased presence of the EULEX officials, who make routine checks.
Since the norhtern border has been mostly used for smuggle, Kosovo officials say that they have to check every vehicle and register every type of goods that goes through, despite their destination.
After working for three days, the Kosovo officials return with a helicopter.
