The rector of the Prishtina University, Ibrahim Gashi, resigned after what he considered a psychological and emotional pressure.

“After the constant and dishonest pressure, often with deep political implications from a group of students, a part of the civil society and from some political groups”, he declared.

“I wanted the University as an institution to give its word about this, and find the responsibility for everyone, even mine. But since the pressure against the university is now putting in danger its functionality, then I am resigning, convinced that this might leave the University peaceful to do its job”, he added.

Gashi expressed conviction in his innocence, saying that the resignation doesn’t mean leaving the responsibility. Gashi’s resignation has been approved by the Board of Direction in an extraordinary meeting held this Saturday.

His resignation came after more than one week of protests by students and civil society, with dozens of them being injured and getting arrested.

Naser Sahiri, prorector for Budget and Finances, was appointed by the Board of Directors of the Prishtina University to take the role, as confirmed by the Prishtina University rectorate after a communication with the media.
