The Kosovo party leaders agreed for the Parliament to be dissolved this
Wednesday and new elections to be held. The decision as takn in a
meeting that the party leaders had with President Atifete Jahjaga.
Kosovo is holding early elections because it is impossible for the Parliament to approve the creation of the Armed Forces, due to conditions set by the minorities, by asking their reserved seats.
Before the meeting of the leaders, Prime Minister Thaci declared that it is useless to have a Parliament that is unable to take important decisions.
“We agreed to start the procedures for dissolving the Parliament, so that we can hold early elections on June 8th”, Thaci declared.
“The LDK has agreed to hold a meeting tomorrow for dissolving the Parliament. We agreed to hold the new elections on June”, declared the chairman of the LDK, Isa Mustafa.
“We have discussed about the variants of the elections, which are several. The Prime Minister’s resignation, a trust motion and the decision for dissolving the Parliament. We will support the dissolution of the Parliament”, declared Ramush Haradinaj, leader of the AAK.
“The New Kosovo Alliance has expressed the deep regret that the elections have to be organized this quickly. However, we will have a meeting tomorrow to review the election date”, declared the vice leader of the AKR, Mimoza Kusari Lila.
The Self-Determination Movement and parties of the minorities were not present in the meeting. This meeting will be held Wednesday afternoon, when the Parliament will summon the extraordinary session.
The President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, declared that she had been informed about the procedures for the early elections.
“As President, I will be the unity factor of our country. I respect the Parliament’s decision, which is the first step that obliges me as President of our country”, Jahjaga declared after the meeting.
The Kosovo Parliament has 120 Parliament Members, and for dissolving it are needed at least 80 votes.
If the Self-Determination Movement and the Parliament Members of the minority parties will not vote the motion, the agreement between leaders will fail. Then the government will be fored to resign in order to make way for the new elections. June 8th remains the date that has been proposed for early elections.
