The Kosovo political leaders have canceled all their electoral campaign
activities. There have been speculations that the Central Election
Commission might be postponed due to the tragedy.
“I have never demanded to postpone the elections, but I only asked what would we do if the situation would force us to postopne the elections. First of all we must evaluate the situation, and I don’t think that it is necessary to postpone the elections, since the situation is under control”, declared Isa Mustafa, leader of the LDK.
Sources near the government said for Top Channel that the campaign was canceled for showing solidarity to the victims, and that the elections would be held this Sunday.
But the political parties have denied having postponed the elections. The Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission, Valdete Daka, declared that no one asked to postpone the elections.
One day before the electoral silence, Daka and the Central Election Commission member met with President Atifete Jahjaga, to whom they confirmed that everything is ready for holding normal elections.
The political leaders visited the site of the tragedy in Obiliq to encourage the civil emergency workers who were looking for possible victims.
The leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, declared that all parties should be together in this moment. All institutions should be committed to face the situation and save every workers’ life.
After the incident, the Self-Determination Movement expressed their condolences to the workers’ families who lost their lives and demanded urgent investigation for the cause of this explosion.
The leader of the New Kosovo Alliance also suspended the activities on terrain, while the AAK leader, Ramush Haradinaj, went to Oibliq.
The Kosovo President, Atifete Jahjaga, visited the wounded in the Prishtina Hospital and after expressing her condolences for the relatives, she asked a thorough investigation for the tragedy, so that they can be avoided in the future.
