Kosovo, debate for pay raises

The Parliament of Kosovo discussed the government decision for raising public administration salaries.

The opposition was against this decision, which foresees higher salaries for the employees of the Presidency, the Parliament and Government.

Parliament Speaker Jakup Krasniqi considered the government’s decision as illegal and declared that it should be up to the Parliament.

“Salaries have been raised in an unreasonable way, by deepening the difference between those who are in difficult conditions, and those who have good salaries. This pay raise should be done in a linear way, with one given sum for all categories”, Krasniqi declared.

Krasniqi made these comments after Prime Minister Thaci asked the Parliament Members to declare if they were against this raise.

“If the Parliament wants to reject this raise, I appeal all government members to withdraw and let the Parliament decide”, Thaci declared.

The Head of the LDK Parliamentary Group, Ismet Beqiri, considered the Prime Minister’s appeal as a marketing technique.

“Don’t make marketing by not allowing pay raise for government employees. Don’t raise the salary for us Parliament Members, just withdraw the decision for raised salaries”, Beqiri declared.

Ardian Gjini from the AKK criticized the decision for increasing the salaries before elections.

“It’s an insult for employees to raise their salaries always before the elections, and then make their lives difficult for four years”, Gjini declared.
