Prishtina’s streets were decorated with the Albanian national flag for
the sixth anniversary of independence. Citizens from all Albanian lands
gathered in the Kosovo capital to celebrate.
The Monument of Independence has now a new look, and has been the star of pictures taken during the celebrations.
The Kosovo President, Atifete Jahjaga; the Kosov Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci and other leaders of the country paid homage at the Jashari family cemetery in Prekaz, and in the grave of the former President of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, who was praised by Kosovo leaders for his contribution in the state making of Kosovo.
Six years after declaring independence, Kosovo has been recognized by 106 countries and became a member of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
Prime Minister Thaci: New challenges await us
The Kosovo Parliament held a solemn session for the 6th anniversary of independence. The Parliament Speaker, Jakup Krasniqi, declared:
“We bow to the martyrs who gave their lives for independence. Independent Kosovo has brought democratic values for six years, and now our country entered the project of Euro-Atlantic integration”.
Prime Minister Hashim Thaci reminded during his speech the war of KLA, the sacrifice of all citizens for freedom, Rugova’s constant work and the heroism of Adem Jashari.
“I want to express my gratitude for the martyrs who gave their lives for freedom and independence. This is a day of joy and happiness for us, but on the same time we feel pain for the brothers and sisters that disappeared so that we could achieve this day. We have turned pain into strength and we have taken the fates of our country in our hands. On behalf of the Kosovo citizens, I thank all western allies who believed on our right cause and helped us reach independence. I thank the Albanian state for the great help that they have been giving”, Thaci declared.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo listed the political achievements in these six years: “We have achieved a lot in a record time. We signed agreements for normalizing the relations with the Serbian state. We undid the illegal structures in northern Kosovo, and held the first democratic elections. We must be proud, since the challenges that we have been facing have been extraordinary”.
“We are working for a Kosovo where the rule of law prevails, where the social classes are treated with dignity, where every citizen has hope and welfare. We who have lived in robbery, we know the real value of freedom. For this reason we will work so that every Kosovo citizen enjoys his rights and freedom”, the Prime Minister declared.
Thaci declared that Kosovo will succeed in the other tests that they will face in the future.
“We are showing that our democracy works. We have many challenges ahead and altogether we must be prepared to make the right sacrifices. I am convinced that we will overcome these challenges, since we have showed this even earlier.
The President of Kosovo, Ahtifete Jahjaga, declared during a speech after the Kosovo Special Forces parade that February 17th marks the undeniable and unchangeable history of the new Kosovo state.
“We are all realizing the ideals of entire generations for an equal society”, Jahjaga declared.
