Kodheli: Military Secret Service spied foreign diplomats

Invited on Top Channel’s talk show “Top Story”, hosted by Sokol Balla,
the Albanian Minister of Defense talked about the scandal and
accusations that the previous government had bought an expensive
surveillance equipment which has been used illegally to spy on the then
opposition and foreign diplomats.

The Minister of Defense says that this has made the former Albanian government not very reliable for our strategic allies.

“One of the first things I have been told by our strategic partners, high representatives of the United States Department of Defense was: “We could not share information with you until yesterday, because corruption and the problems you have had didn’t make you reliable”, the Minister declared.

“The fact is that the military secret service, together with some other structures, has been used anti-constitutionally to wiretap the opposition and foreign diplomats,” the Minister added.

When asked if there was any evidence, the Minister replied:

“It’s the opposition who supposedly has a hard drive where this is allegedly recorded, and they have supposedly changed it because it brings to light the scandal you mentioned now”.

Host Sokol Balla: “You spoke about the purchase of an expensive and very sophisticated surveillance equipment by the secret service. Is it about this equipment, which, according to you, has been used illegally to wiretap diplomats and politicians?”

Defense Minister, Mimi Kodheli: “Yes, it is this equipment. 1.6 million EUR from the taxpayers money were used for this”.

Sokol Balla: “And the Prosecution has irrefutable evidence to prove this?”

Mimi Kodheli: “According to me, yes”.
