Majlinda Bregu: “I am here with my colleague Fatmir Mediu for the Prayers Morning that is organized every year, and for holding a series of meetings with the Parliament’s Commission. I think that the meeting with the rapporteur should have been indispensable”.

Knut Fleckenstein, rapporteur for Albania in the European Parliament: “Two things, first of all, the support of the Parliament and the Commission to Balkan countries, including Albania, and their path towards the European Union. Secondly, the importance of the political dialogue and the fact that the Parliament is the place to hold political battles. But the opposition’s working conditions should be honest. The details of this matter should not be discussed through the media, but I will discuss it with the Socialist Party. There are some ideas from the Democratic Party for how things could work. I will take a look at them to discuss them with the Socialist Party, if we can reach something. I don’t have to contact any Parliament Member who might have a different opinion on this. I must see what the Democratic Party says as an institution, and I must work with it, which is what I will do”.

Majlinda Bregu: If the opposition’s role in the Parliament is not respected, and if we don’t pass to a process in which all parties are responsible, but by respecting their position, then the situation is not what the international partners expect from us, but it wouldn’t be for the best of Albania neither.

I don’t think that this period has more pressure for the fact that the opposition might return in Parliament if the mandates will be at danger. This can be discussed and become part of the media declaration, without having any detailed discussion within the Parliamentary group of the Democratic Party. You know the stances, because they are public. I have nothing else to add.

Besides the report for Albania, Bregu met with Eduard Kukan and the representatives of the Enlargement Directory and of the Cabinet of Commission Hahn. In all meetings Bregu presented a letter with five points of the opposition.

“We have reiterated for a long time the message for respecting the verdicts of the Constitutional Court, of the Constitution and of the legal structure of our country for decriminalizing the Parliament. This means that in Parliament must not come those who want to benefit from it, but those who want to change something. These are the requests made by the Democratic Party, and of course they still stand”, Bregu declared.
