KESH leaves big business

The government has prepared a law that removes all obligations that the
Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) has towards a specific category of
consumers, mainly big businesses.

According to the draft, the businesses connected with the 110 KV line and that consume over 50 million kilowatt hours per year will ensure energy by themselves.

“This energy is in average 750-800 KW hours per year. If we would refer to the import price, it goes to a value of 40 million EUR per year”, says Engjell Zeqo, KESH director.

Energy consumption in the country increases in average with 6-7% each year. According to Zeqo, the corporation has not built new sources each year, and for this they are facing difficulties in suppling the country’s demands.

“In a moment when the demand for energy is always increasing, it is difficult for KESH to secure this energy from their sources. We must import it”, Zeqo declared.

The Corporation is expected to produce 4.2 billion KW power from the hydropower plants. But this money will be spent for buying 700-800 million KW hours from imports that are needed for fulfilling the consumption in the country. This is due to the fact that what KESH buys in import costs 7 ALL, and what CEZ sells is 1.5 ALL.

“Besides the fact that it lowers the obligation, it also preserves a lower price toward CEZ, so that we avoid a possible energy price increase for small and medium businesses”, Zeqo declared.

Some of these companies are expected to leave the state owned power provider, had imported energy on their own when the country was facing energy crisis. But after the situation stabilized, they returned to the system, since the price of KESH was lower than the one that was bought by alternative companies.
