A two-day meeting is being held in Strasbourg between the Seventh
Inter-Parliamentary Committee of Stabilization and Association with
Albania.
The second person in charge of the European Parliament Delegation for Southeastern Europe, Jelko Kacin, underlined that the candidate status is important for Albania, but it is not everything.
According to him, the country’s ambitions go beyond this objective by continuing with the reforms.
The Dutch European MP, Maria Cornelisen, underlined that the candidate status of Albania was not blocked this December by extremists or “islamophobes”.
Stabilization-Association Agreement, opposition: Status in danger
The Democratic Party Parliament Members, Majlinda Bregu, Eduard Halimi and Aldo Bumci, held speeches at the Stabilization-Association Agreement Committee that is being held in Strasbourg.
Bregu declared that the government needs to stand to the European standards and the Copenhagen criteria, adding that the opposition will support the government if they respect standards.
“If the government doesn’t change, I fear that we will lose the status in December”, Bregu declared.
Parliament Member Halimi raised the “Mafia Package” concern, accusing the government of lying about this matter. They underline that the package attacks political opponents and intimidates independent institutions.
“Rama does not fight corruption, but tries to take independent institutions”, Halimi declared.
Parliament Member Bumci mentioned the January 21st event, and underlined that those who incited violence need to be punished.
“Rama wanted to take over the Prime Minister’s office on January 21st. We want the organizers and authors of the January 21st violence to receive the deserved punishment”, Bumci declared.
