Justice Minister: Antimafia law for Judges

10/07/2014 00:00

The Minister of Justice, Nasip Naco, declared that the situation at the
High Council of Justice made it necessary to take urgent measures for
this system.

“We have a consolidated majority. We haven’t used it so far because we wanted to realize the reforms with all the actors, including the opposition, but we are in an emergent situation and we will soon hold a conference in which we will invite all our partners, even the international ones”, Naco declared.

The Minister of Justice considered as unprecedented the 12 HCJ votes in favor of the unjustified wealth of judges, and only one against.  The Minister declared that the Antimafia law must be extended.

“If judges accept millions of Euros in gifts, then we are lost. That’s why I have asked and I will keep asking to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior to apply the antimafia law for seizing all assets coming from crime”, Naco declared.

When asked if there will be initiatives for discharging the members appointed at the HCJ by the Parliament, the Minister answered:

“We have proposed some essential changes, because we are in a situation of alarm. The HCJ has lost its integrity, because it has taken people from politics to the judiciary, which is unacceptable. This question can be done to the members of the commission of laws. As a Minister, I have resigned as an MP and I don’t vote in this case. The goal was to distance the HCJ and show that the judiciary doesn’t have the face of the government anymore”.

The Parliament is represented at the HCJ by three members, including the vice chairman Elvis Cefa, who were appealed by the government to act for at least the members appointed by him, arguing that they do not represent the law anymore.

As for the judiciary reform perspective, they will see for a new formula of the HCJ composition, in order to change the majority that currently comes from the judiciary.

Judges react: You are throwing mud on our work

The Executive Council of the National Judiciary Conference reacted during an urgent meeting by expressing the concern of all judges from all levels regarding what he calls “public declarations addressed in general to all judges”.

“These declarations only deteriorate the image of the judiciary and throw mud on the daily work of judges. Identifying all judges with the negative phenomena makes our work more difficult, damages the independence of the judiciary and the entire justice mission”, the declaration says.

The Executive Council condemns any corruptive show at the judiciary system and appeals all institutions to fight this phenomenon. The Council support the further reformation of the judiciary, but says that in this process it is necessary to cooperate with all justice system operators.
