Four years ago, on January 21st, four protesters were killed by the
Albanian National Guard soldiers: Ziver Veizi, Aleks Nika, Hekuran Deda
and Faik Myrtaj. Today, their relatives walked with Prime Minister Rama
to put flowers on the places of their deaths.

The Prime Minister says that the weight of responsibility for making justice, constantly reiterated by their relatives, is still very heavy.

Mark Nika the uncle of Aleks Nika, says what they have discussed with the Prime Minister: “We will reactivate the investigations in full accordance with our legislation and go to the end of this”, he declared.

“After June 23rd, the leader of the Democratic Party will be placed in front of a public transparent process for the Constitutional and legal law violations, with loss of lives as consequence. The children of the four January 21st martyrs should not suffer from the murderous ending of a trial that hasn’t really started. I guarantee the four families, and also the killers of justice, that January 21st is one of those events that can never be forgotten without justice”.

This is what Prime Minister Rama declared on February 7th 2013, when the Socialist Party was in opposition, just two years ago. January 21st remains an important issue for the Socialist Party, which calls it a “state crime” and reiterates that those who ordered it are not convicted yet. The Socialists say that going to the end of this shocking event for the Albanian democracy is still difficult.

The former National Guard commander, Ndrea Prendi, was sentenced to one year in prison for negligence. Margarit Kume, the driver of the former National Guard Commander, was found innocent.

The Prosecution has sent their appeal to the Supreme Court, insisting that the murders were deliberate.

In October 2013, the Supreme Court has cast lots but they have not decided for the trial day, although more than one year has passed, causing another scandal for the January 21st case.
