The Popular Republic of Albania was the official name of the Albanian state, established in January 11th, 1946.
All churches in Albania were notified to ring their bells at 13:30 when the National Assembly would declare in front of the people and the world that Albania was a Popular Republic.
The declaration was followed by 101 cannot shots and two days of celebrations throughout the country.
Enver Hoxha, the Secretary-General of the Communist Party, was declared head of state.
King Zog, in exile, was declared a brutal tyrant and a traitor.
The Royal Court received the order without any surprise and without protests, but they declared that for Albanians there is a more serious matter than the formation of a regime.
And that matter was the issue of national territorial integrity and the rights of the people’s sovereignty.
After declaring the Republic, the government started drafting the Constitution. This discussion lasted two months.
On March 14th, the National Assembly passed the new Constitution, which turned the Assembly into the Popular Parliament.
In 1976, the official name was changed to the Republic of Albania. The Constitution was changed to “The Popular Socialist Republic of Albania”, which lasted until 1991.
