The Italian Senate has postponed the ratification of the agreement
between Albania, Italy and Greece for the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline
project that will bring the Azeri gas to Europe.
The news was made public by the news agency Reuters. According to them, the decision was taken after some Senators have asked for more information about the recent developments of this project, especially the expropriation changes that have taken place during the last weeks, but also for the pre-purchase agreements signed a few days ago between the Shah Deniz field and nine European companies.
This was the official motivation, but the problems in Italy seem deeper. Italy is the last country that has not ratified the agreement yet. Recently politicians and local leaders of our neighboring country have been against the pipeline.
A few days ago, Nichi Vendolda, one of the main figures of the left parties in Italy, and also President of the Puglia Region, publicly declared that Prime Minister Leta cannot close one ear and one eye before the opposition coming from the citizens who live in the areas where the TAP project will pass.
La Gazzetta Del Mezzogionro says that the Mayor of Melendrugno, a Lecce region, has sent a letter Vendola in which he expresses his clear opposition to the project, and asks him as President of the Region to not give the permits for the construction of the pipeline. TAP is the TAP project that has been chosen to transport the Azeri gas to Europe through a 40 billion EUR investment that goes through Greece, Albania and ends in Italy.
