While Greece has mentioned the resolution of the maritime border issue
with Albania as a condition for opening the negotiations of Albania’s EU
accession, the Italian Presidency, which took the direction of the EU
yesterday, says that Albania’s conditions are clearly set by the
European Council.
“It is very clear which are the conditions that a candidate country should complete for opening the negotiations. Those are the criteria established by the Copenhagen Card, and are not established by one country or another. These conditions are related to the reforms, and require serious efforts”, declared the Italian Ambassador to Tirana, Massimo Gaiani.
“Reforms at the public administration, justice reforms, reforms against organized crime and corruption. These are the reforms that Albania needs to fulfill for the negotiations. The agenda is clear. As soon as these conditions are met, the member countries will recommend the starting of negotiations unanimously”, declared the representative of the EU mission, Clive Rambold.
Italy has listed the enlargement policy with Western Balkan countries as their top priority. They declared in Tirana that they will help Albania to fulfill the obligations for the next step.
The border management policy will be harsher, since Italy faces a serious immigration problem, for which they have often criticized the European Union. Italy will demand a bigger role of the EU in the Mediterranean, where Albania is included, to face illegal immigration and stop asylum seekers.
The other priority presented by Italy is reducing the unemployment and the Euro-skepticism in Europe. The Italian ambassador declared that this is a serious problem, and the next priority of the presidency held by his country is empowering the influence of European institutions on the citizens of these countries.
