Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano requested from Tirana alongside Albanian counterpart Ditmir Bushati real commitment from European Union in the Western Balkans, because tensions are rising in the region, followed by nationalistic rhetoric from some political leaders.

“Western Balkans is an area of strategic importance for all of Europe. Despite considerable success in the integration process risks of a destabilized region are increasing, casting doubts on positive results achieved so far”, Alfano said. “And that is exactly why UE must reaffirm its role as a main partner for the whole region and send a strong message of commitment in the Western Balkans”, he added.

Asked about the boycott of the opposition, Alfano replied: “We do support reforms process of Albania, which coincide with key priorities imposed by the EU. But I cannot interfere in internal politic dynamics of a free and sovereign country”.

Albanian FM Bushati said justice reform and vetting law “were key elements for regaining trust from the citizens as well as a step closer to talks opening”. “All political parties voted unanimously on July 21st for the constitutional changes and all our citizens and international partner expect from us to go on with this reform”, Bushati said.

Alfano met also with President Bujar Nishani and Prime Minister Rama discussing with regarding the Trieste Summit, due to be held on July 12th.
