Italian court recognizes danger by northern Albanian “Kanun”, offers protection

The Court of Appeal in Ancona, Italy, has ruled in favor of an Albanian citizen, sentenced to 14 years for murder.

After serving his time, he had requested international protection for humanitarian reasons. The Court of Appeal argues that the life of the person in question is endangered in remote Northern Albania, where old “Kanun” book is still applied.

The Kanun rules bind those who obey it to revenge a taken life by killing the murderer. This is why the Court of Appeal in Italy ruled to offer protection to this person, who has killed another Albanian on Christmas 2002.

The Court of First Instance in Ancona had rejected their first request, but the Court of Appeal ruled in favor.
