Investigators from the National Bureau of Investigation announced today that they seized the cellphone of Ajola Xoxa, the wife of Erjon Veliaj, mayor of the Albanian capital Tirana.
The BKH investigators were at the couple’s home in the early hours of the morning, but the prosecution was sparing in providing information, saying only that it was ‘carrying out some investigative actions’.
The Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime informs that some investigative actions have been taken as part of a criminal proceeding, but since the investigation is still in the preliminary phase, “we cannot publish any further data or information”, they add.
The seizing of Ajola Xoxa’s phone was also confirmed by lawyer Shkëlzen Selimi.
The BKH ‘visit’ to the Tirana mayor’s house took place at a time when Veliaj is on a visit to Hamburg, Germany. The municipality’s press office announced that the visit will last two days and that so far Veliaj has met with the first mayor of Hamburg and the president of the Hamburg parliament, Carola Veit.
As sources indicate, several people are expected to be questioned in the coming days.
