Investigation for Kareli’s murder

New developments are expected for the murder case of Ilia Kareli, the
Albanian prisoner who killed a Greek prison guard and then died of
internal injuries possibly inflicted by the other guards. The
investigation has passed to the Court of the Serra, and new arrests are
expected in the upcoming hours, probably even the arrest of the Chief
Guardian of the Nigrita prison, where the Albanian prisoner was tortured
and died after committing a murder.

The Prosecution’s order no.112/2014 says that everything has taken place in the Nigrita prison. No criminal act has taken place in the Malandrino prison, where guards have used legal violence since Kareli has stabbed and killed a prison guard. No violence has been used in the Itea police precinct or during his transfer trip.

Different information in the Greek press confirm that Kareli has been beaten in the Nigrita prison with a whip. One of the prison guards said he was whipped in his soles too. Coroners are also investigating if he had injuries before March 25th, when he attacked the Malandrino prison guard. Coroner Eleni Zaggelidis denied the news published on some Albanian media outlets that Kareli’s nails were missing and that his feet were broken. However, they are still waiting the results for the burns found on his hands.

The main testimony comes from the Director of the Nigrita Prison, Haris Consilidhis, who confirmed the tortures used against the Albanian prisoner. Then he called his wife to apologize and tried to commit suicide. He testified that nine prison guards have tortured Kareli, but only two of them have admitted using violence. Seven others have denied everything.

Another important evidence is a video in which the prisoner is seen being dragged by guardians after he stayed for hours in a cell without cameras with the people who tortured him. The Prosecution has accused 14 prison guards of torture with fatal consequences, torture, and physical damage caused by violence. The 14 prison guards have also tried to create an alibi. They have washed the blood stains from Kareli’s cell, and that’s why the Prosecution has ordered for DNA tests. They have tortured him in the room without cameras and declared that he arrived beaten by the police officers, trying to put the blame on them.

The “To Vima” newspaper has published a short portrait of the Albanian prisoner. He appeared as Valentino Popesku, of Romanian origin. From 1997 to 2011 he had been involved in more than 11 trials, and was finally sentenced to 14 years in prison for theft. After being released in 2006, he was arrested one year later for robbing 100 EUR and threatened to kill the house owners, a couple. He had threatened to cut the wive’s throat with the glass of a photo frame, and tried to suffocate her husnband with a chain. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but the sentence was reduced to 12. Some of his photos in the Greek prisons are circulating around the domestic media. Some confirm that the Albanian prisoner had at least four accounts on Facebook.
