International community scanning candidates for Mayors

While the political parties in Albania are concluding the lists of
candidates for the June 21st local elections, the international
community accredited to Tirana is scanning every name of candidates made
official so far.

A diplomatic source says in anonymity for Top Channel that the western Ambassadors in Tirana have made it clear to PM Rama and opposition leader Basha that candidates with a problematic past will not be tolerated.

The same source says that if the political leaders will not avoid these candidates, their names will be contested publicly as part of the decriminalization process, which has found the support of the western diplomats.

Top Channel has also learned that an important embassy of a partner country has asked the one of the bigger political parties to withdraw the candidacy of two persons, one in Middle Albania and one for Northern Albania.

One of them is currently a Mayor, while the other one is not part of the list of candidates of this political party.

Two weeks ago, the US Ambassador to Tirana, Donald Lu, in an online conversation with the Albanian citizens, said that they are watching the process very closely.

“When we see names of people we believe might be corrupted or tied with criminal activities, we tell this to the party leaders. The Albanian people must have high expectancies from their political representatives and they should be sincere when believing that candidates have ties with the crime”, Lu declared.

“We believe that all candidates should fulfill the highest ethical standards, and none of them should have ties with criminal cases”, the US diplomat added.
