Interior Minister: “30 tons of cannabis seized in 50 days”

14/07/2017 00:00

After authorities seized more than 15 tons of cannabis, stored in three
Llakatund homes, the Albanian Minister of Interior, Dritan Demiraj,
warned that there will be other similar operations by the state police.

The Minister said more than 10 boats were seized, suspected of being used for transportation of cannabis.

“We have arrested several people, and of course there are others who stand behind this huge quantity that was about to be trafficked abroad. There will be similar successful operations in the days to come. Maybe not in such huge scale, but you know that there has been a massive production and there will be other storage homes as well. We are determined to uncover them and bring to justice anyone who is involved”, Demiraj said.

But since the police is looking throughout the entire territory, can drug cultivation be considered a concern for the country?

“There are some very small areas which are being identified. The Police will eliminate the plants. We have evidence for this, since the police has been unfairly accused several times of not eliminating the drug. Police makes the identification right away, they burn the material and secures the evidence. We are determined to clean the State Police from officials who may be involved with traffics. I can say that the drug quantity that has been planted is still very small. We are working intensively, but I cannot say with responsibility that there are no more plants. We will continue this fight with the Interior Ministry and all other structures as well”, Demiraj declared.

Different from the other Ministries with technical Ministers, who, same as Demiraj, have been appointed by the opposition after the Rama-Basha agreement, Demiraj sees no problem to praise the work done by the General Chief of Police, Haki Cako, and every other officer for the operation that made possible discovering the huge drug quantity.
