Integration, Arvizu: Albania ranked last

The US Ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, has criticized the Albanian
political class for the slow process of the EU candidate status in the
EU.

Arvizu visited Elbasan in for promoting the initiative “Act Now”. He declared that the politicians hold most of the responsibility for the fact that the country is ranked last in teh region for integration, because their performance is not enough. According to Arvizu, the Albanian politicians are more dedicated to the campaign rather than resolving the citizens’ problems.

“Allow me to say that there’s no reason why Albania should not be in the front line of the countries that want to become members of the EU, and this is not a critic for the neighbors. But there’s no reason why Albania should not be ahead. In the contrary, it’s ranked last. This is not because of you, but because of some given stiuations and the system in Albania. Are the political leaders responsible for this? Certainly! But politicians have specific characteristics everywhere. They are mostly dedicated on the elections, but they don’t pay attention to the governing and administration of the country. This is a problem that we see in Albania too, but the difference is that the American people do not allow this in the US. The population there is bigger and many are passive, but many others say to the politicians that if you don’t behave responsibly, there will be a surprise for you in the next elections. And in fact, this is not only for the political power in general. This is a matter of its own and something that doesn’t bother me much. What I am talking about are the daily problems, the bread and butter, the daily problems of the Albanians”, Ambassador Arvizu declared.

He also criticized the education, health, environmental and governing systems.

“Education. Why are school texts so expensive? Why the Albanian parents should be concerned when they have to buy school books, and who in the government is doing anything about this? Health! One of the main problems is the preventive health care. Who in the government is really pushing the preventive health care for the citizens’ health, so that costs can be reduced? Environment! Everyone feels ashamed when we see wastes thrown everywhere. It shouldn’t be like this. Who in the government is giving stable efforts to this? And then we have the good governing. I cannot give examples. My goal is not to criticize the local or central government, but to be sincere, shouldn’t their performance be better? Yes, it must! This is your job, to decide who will govern in the next elections. The concept “Act Now” doesn’t regard the people that you have elected. Certainly, they have a critical role, but you must insist and ask for your leaders to answer to your needs, to listen to your ideas and concerns”, the US diplomat declared.

Arvizu appealed the citizens from Elbasan to be part of the “Act Now” initiative, by asking new ideas from them about the real challenges in Albania.
