Inspection of slaughterhouses in Gjirokaster

18/03/2014 00:00

Only two slaughterhouses are recognized officially in the town of
Gjirokaster. They can supply the market with 60-70 animals each day,
which is certainly not enough for a population of 45.000.

The two points are inspected by veterinarians of the local government, the only ones who can guarantee a safe arrival of meat in our market.

But the area is full of illegal butcher shops which could be dangerous. However, specialists say that it is difficult to keep the situation under inspection.

The NFA in Gjirokaster has seized and eliminated 220 kg of meat that was being sold without the veterinarian stamps. They have given 10 fines, mainly regarding the hygienic conditions.

Lacking of a genuine slaughterhouse, specialists have identified cases and have issued warnings to all owners. There are 39 licensed meat shops in the district, while police says that most of the product is sold without veterinary inspection.
