Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and early sexual relations
might cause serious problems for Albania’s next generations. A study of
the Public Health Institution brings shocking facts after a poll.
3.4% of them report that they have frequent access to alcohol, and 1.5% of them consume five different types of drinks. The number of sexual relations among 14-15 year olds has increased with 5% in one year, which has also increased the number of abortions.
“The reports about early sexual relations have increased, together with the usage of cannabis”, says Gentiana Qirjako, Promotion Chief at the Public Health.
15-year-old schoolboys have reported that they have tried cannabis at least once in their lives. 2.3% say they have consumed cannabis at least once in the past 30 days.
The number of girls consuming light drugs has also increased, which raises an alarm for institutions that should take more care of their education.
“This study should serve as an alarm signal for all institutions that are related to the children health, especially the education and health ones, so that they can plan policies and programs that focus not only on healthy behaviors, but that also keep in consideration the social conditions of the children involved”, says Gentiana Qirjako, Chief of the Promotion Department.
This study was supported by UNICEF and UNFPA, with the purpose to guarantee accurate data about children from 11 to 15 years of age.
