In the fourth quarter of last year the natural increase of the population was positive, while there were 1038 more births than deaths.
However, birth rates are lower by 7.6%, the state statisics say, while credit for the positive increase in the population comes only because of the decrease in mortality by 10.5%, according to them.
Meanwhile, according to the national statistics institute INSTAT, during the fourth quarter only seven Albanian counties recorded positive natural growth, while in five others there were more deaths than births.
The highest number of deaths was recorded in Korça district, followed by Gjirokastra, Berat, Vlora and Fier.
The negative figures in Fier, the second most populous county after the capital, gives a strong warning for future population projections.
Meanwhile, Tirana and Durrës are the two central counties with the fastest population increase.
INSTAT’s annual data show that 22,210 babies were born across the country, an annual decrease of 10% or about 2,500 babies fewer than a year ago.
The counties with the lowest birth rates were Gjirokastra, Kukësi and Berati.
Declining birth rates and emigration are causing our country to age at a rapid rate. On January 1, 2023, 2.76 million people were registered in our country, a reduction of 15% from 1990. In June of this year, the results of the last national census are expected to be published.
