528 people have been tried and sentenced by the Court of Serious Crimes
for drug traffic in Albania since 2008, most of whom caught in the act
with cannabis sativa.

In an interview for Top Channel, the President of this Court, Sander Simoni, declared that the criminal code needs to be reviewd for this crime.

“The Criminal Code makes no distinction between the quantity of drug and the person that has been caught. The accusations must be clear between cultivation, possession, trafficking and those coming from other countries”, Simoni declared.

What should change in the Criminal Code, now that the number of drug traffic cases at the Prosecution of Serious Crimes is on the rise?

“In cases of a typical organized crime, with large quantities for trafficking, the sentence should be different from sporadic cases of drug traffic for economic circumstances or for extreme acts that are not part of the organized crime but that are included in this phenomenon”, Simoni declared.

The drug traffic cases are on top of the list for the highest volume in this Court for three years now, and there is a growth of 13% compared to 2013, according to Simoni.

Only during these six months, the Court has signed 800 requests for surveillance, a number that in 2013 was valid for the entire year.

“45% of the crimes in 2014 were about drug traffic”, declared the President of the Court of Serious Crimes.

What is the specialty of drug traffic in Albania?

“The tendency is cannabis sativa. Recently we have had a number of cases with drug traffic of cocaine and heroine, using Albania as transitory”, Simoni declared.
