Every November 28th, Isak Asllani travels to his village, Ranca, in the Shtime area, Kosovo, where he cleans snow from seven graves of his children, who were killed 20 years ago by Serbian forces, together with his mother, his wife and his niece.
His oldest son, Burim, was only 13 years old. He lost Lumnije, Ejup, Luljeta, Shpendi, Xhaferri and the youngest, Antigona, who was just 1 year old.
“We fought for three days. I went back to take my family to safety. I was with my brother, Musa. Serbian tanks arrived and fired at us. They killed them all. I also was wounded”, Isak Asllani says.
A veteran and war invalid, Isak joined the Kosovo Liberation Army to defend his home, his wife and children. Although he was unable to protect them, he found strength once again to join the army.
“I miss them very much. 20 years are gone, but for me, it is as if it happened today. Although they killed my entire family, I would have never been able to kill any child among Serbs”, Isaku says.
But life had to go on. Isak married again and his bride was accompanied by the KLA soldiers in November 1998. And now, 20 years later, 60-years-old, on the cold days of November 2017, Isak finally received his twin children. He considers their birth a real miracle, a victory of life against death, and the biggest revenge against the enemy.
“I gave them the names of Ejup and Lumnije. This is a gift from God. I have always dreamt to pass on the names of my children”, Isak Asllani says.
