A 3.5 million euro development project for Himara will be met with protests from local residents this Sunday. The project that aims to redesign the city center will have impact on six buildings and land, something residents do not accept. They say they have little or no information at all about this project.
Himara Mayor, Jorgo Goro, told Top Channel everyone has the right to protest, but the project is designed for the good of all citizens of Himara. “This project will improve the living standards of 5 to 600 families and will be a development opportunity. Business in the city center will also double. We will destroy some walls constructed during the last years to construct more roads, parking slots and playgrounds for kids”, Goro said. “The project will affect six families but others are making all the noise, people who have other intentions”.
But while the protest is scheduled to be held on Sunday at 7 PM, it seems people outside the region are interested in it. For some days now the Greek-American citizen Nikolas Cage has been seen in southern Albania. He is well-known for his stance on Himara calling it a Greek territory and his efforts for autonomy have never been kept hidden. His efforts for three decades for the so-called North Epirus have set up some fierce clashes between him and Albania. Former President Berisha declared him “non grata” in the nineties, but relationship between the two improved in 2002, but deteriorated with the Nano government of the time.
