Health Institution: Disinfect territories

Although municipalities have a special budget and their workers are trained each year for this purpose, they don’t complete this process because the funds always change destination.

“We have a partial disinfection mainly in coastal areas. It is up to the local administration to complete this task. They have hygiene specialists for these processes and the necessary capacity and budget to manage the situation not only during the tourist season”, declared Eugena Tomini, specialist at the Public Health.

Flies and mosquitoes turned into a serious concern not only for the residents of coastal areas near lagoons and swamps, but also for residents of other cities. They are also a big concern for tourists. Specialists at the Public Health Institution say that there are 13 cases of malaria in Albania, although these cases have been imported from abroad.

“The vector is present in lagoons, former swamps and places where the canalization system is in open air”, Tomini declared.

The Health Ministry says that besides the private sectors, they will start applying fines against communes and municipalities that do not complete the disinfection processes.

“Private subjects, such as bars, restaurants, hotels and private houses are obliged to eliminate standing water in deposits, barrels or holes, which create an environment for mosquitoes to thrive. They must contact privately licensed companies to disinfect the area and eliminate all insects. The local administration has a basic role for this”, declared the Director of Policies at the Health Ministry, Gazmend Bejtaj.

Years ago, disinfection was made through helicopters, but this method is considered non-effective today, since it damages the ecological system.
